Sunday 11th March 2007

Under 17s Semi Final

YMCA 1 BRIGHOUSE JUNIORS 2

Brighouse made it through to the final with a workmanlike performance, never reaching the heights of previous weeks. In the opening minutes Matthew Campbell created the first opening after a mazy run down the right flank only to see his cross cleared. Tom Drake forced a good save from the YMCA keeper, and from the resulting corner Matthew Asquith shot over the bar. The breakthrough came after James Anderson robbed a defender and slid his shot past the wrong-footed keeper. The Brighouse back four of Jordan Reid, Max Heaton, Matthew Jones and Tom Gorringe all defended well and winning their personnel battles. YMCA got themselves back into the game within a minute of the restart, a defected cross landed at the feet of the YMCA midfielder who hit a low shot in off the post. The response from Brighouse was a positive one and were unlucky not to score after a great ball from Ben Oakland, they did take the lead soon after when skipper Tom Drake rifled a free kick into the bottom corner. Mitchell Standing almost increased the lead minutes later but the keeper was equal to the shot. YMCA then had their best spell in the game and started to press for the equaliser without really testing Ben Smith in goal, but the introduction of George Learoyd settled Brighouse down and the same player carved out another chance for Anderson who tried to chip the stranded keeper only to see him claw the ball away from the goal. Matthew Asquith won the man of the match accolade, but was pushed all the way by Tom Drake, and Tom Gorringe. Looking forward to the final Lee Moorhouse will be back from honeymoon, but unfortunately a serious injury means Chris Garbutt will be missing.
